What is the most common type of intentional injury involving the youth? What do you feel about this?

 

The most common type of intentional injury including the youth depends on the demographics of the place. In the Philippines, they are usually homicide, physical assault, abuse in the family and in some cases sexual assault. The youth are one of the vulnerable sector of the society and they should not be subjected to any kind of intentional injuries. Self-harm, such as suicide and self-mutilation can also be considered as intentional injuries because there is the intention to injure oneself.  

How do we prevent intentional injuries?

There are some ways in which we can reduce our risks of being injured intentionally.  

  1. Do not provoke a fight. Petty fights usually result in physical violence. Hurting someone is legally and morally wrong.
  2. When in public spaces, stay alert.  
  3. Do not use your phone when in public.
  4. In case you find yourself in danger, head to the nearest police station.  
  5. If you think someone is stalking you, walk towards a place with many people, such as a mall or a big 7-11. Look for the CCTV and make sure you stay within the range of the CCTV.  
  6. Do not trust people easily. When befriending anyone, make sure you know their background so that you know your friends do not engage in violent acts.

Now, these are all preventive measures you can take yourself. This does not mean victim blaming but rather just taking safety precautions so that you will not be put in harms way.  

If you suspect someone is committing intentional injury towards someone, for example child maltreatment and abuse or wife battery, please make sure that you report to the authorities. Try to gather evidence without being hurt yourself. There are usually Womens Desks in police stations where such reports can be taken. We should not condone any act of violence towards another human being.
