Good Day:
Problem:
An inflated with a volume of 0.75 L at 30 °C degrees Celsius was placed inside the freezer where the temperature is-10 °C.How much is the volume of the balloon if the pressure remains constant?
Note: In solving gas law we always have to used kelvin temperature.
Kelvin = 30 +273.15 = 303.15 K Kelvin = -10 +273.15 = 263.15 K
Given Data:
V1 (initial volume) = 0.75 L
T1 (initial temperature) = 30 °C (303.15 K)
T2 (final temperature) = -10 °C ( 263.15 K)
V2 (final volume) = ? unknwon
Solution:
This problem can be solved using Charles Law which state that volume is directly proportional to kelvin temperature when the amount of gas and pressure are constant.
Formula of Charles Law is V1/T1=V2/T2
To find V2 we can used V2 = V1T2 / T1
V2 = V1T2 / T1
= 0.75 L × 263.15 K / 303.15 K (cancel the unit kelvin)
= 197.3625 L / 303.15
= 0.651 L
Answer:
The volume of the balloon is 0.651 L
